For every project I start, I always have to evaluate what color mode to start in. If I feel the work I'll be producing will have legs, and be utilized in several forms of media (video, web, print, etc), then I always choose RGB to create the work. In fact this choice is more and more common when you take into account how digital our society has become.
RGB gives a designer the most freedom. Since you have a palette of 16.7 million colors, your only problem is having too many choices of hues. Even Photoshop works better since there is much more flexibility in rendering your images the way you want them (lighting and layer effects come to mind, as well as how layer transparencies effect other layers and color temperature).
Of course, when the time comes to shift your work into a CMYK spectrum when preparing for prepress, thats where the real problem comes in. Sometimes no matter how much you adjust curves and color balance, the dynamics of your art is lost in the translation from RGB to CMYK.
There are different ways I combat this. Lets say I know I'll be working mainly in Photoshop which will be used predominantly for print. I also know that for this project, I foresee myself using a handful of filters or effects. One way is to start off in CMYK first. I then begin experimenting and laying down my basic color scheme and concepts. Once I feel comfortable in the direction things are going, I then convert everything over to RGB to do all my dirty work.
There is minimal to no color shifts when going from CMYK to RGB. Since my color selections were picked in CMYK mode when I first started, converting back to CMYK from RGB produce closer results with minimal tweaking.
Remember though, don't grow to accustomed to the RGB version, because there is a chance that vibrancy will be gone when you switch back to CMYK.
Its also very important to never show your client your proofs in RGB if its a print project (even if they look better and more vibrant in RGB). I always send proofs as PDFs, since a PDF will retain your color settings. Its bad enough your client's monitor will be poorly calibrated, but risking them viewing your proof in some odd third party image viewer is could make them form the wrong opinion of your work. I have yet come across someone not having Adobe reader installed. Another benefit with a PDF proof is that it will allow them options including the ability to zoom easily for inspection and greater control over printing the proof out on their printer.
Still, be thankful, because you could find yourself having to search for a PMS color, which none seem to match for certain creations, but thats another topic for another day!
